Local business website design in the UK: what actually works in 2026
A local business website has one job: turn the person who tapped your Google Maps listing into a customer. Here's the small set of design decisions that make that happen — and the ones that quietly kill it.
Mobile-first, not mobile-friendly
Over 80% of visits to a UK local business website come from a phone. If your site was designed on a laptop and "checked" on mobile, it will feel like an afterthought. Design decisions — button size, image crop, headline length — should be made on a phone screen first.
What has to be above the fold
- Business name and what you do (in five words or fewer).
- The town or area you serve.
- A click-to-call phone number.
- Today's opening hours — not a generic list.
- One primary action: Book, Quote, Call or Order.
If a visitor can't answer "is this the right business, and how do I contact them?" in three seconds, they leave.
The pages a local business site actually needs
Most local businesses need five pages, not fifteen:
- Home — who you are, what you do, why people trust you.
- Services — what you offer, with prices where sensible.
- About — the team, the story, real photos.
- Reviews / gallery — proof, in your customers' words.
- Contact — map, phone, form, hours, parking notes.
Trust signals in the right places
Google reviews near the top, real photos of the team and premises (not stock), years-in-business, memberships and any local press. A single genuine testimonial with a first name and town outperforms a wall of anonymous five-star quotes.
Speed is a design choice
A pretty site that takes six seconds to load loses more than half its visitors before they see it. Target under two seconds on a mid-range Android on 4G. That means compressed images, no heavy sliders, and no ten-plugin WordPress stack. If your current site fails Google's PageSpeed test, that's the single highest-ROI fix you can make.
Local SEO baked into the design
Your town name in the page title, H1 and footer. Your full NAP (name, address, phone) matching your Google Business Profile exactly. LocalBusiness structured data. A page per town if you serve several. This is design work, not an afterthought a plugin adds later.
Common mistakes we see every week
- Hero video that autoplays and hides the phone number.
- Contact form with 12 fields when a name + phone would do.
- A "menu" or "price list" that's a PDF, not a page.
- Address hidden three clicks deep in the footer.
- Stock photos of American offices on a UK trades site.
